Icarus

A jazz-electronic concept album that reimagines the myth of Icarus. Blending live improvisation, modular synthesis and rhythmic experimentation, FM Experiment traces a different arc, one where the artist turns back before the fall, and discovers that restraint can be its own form of flight.

About

FM Experiment on stage with keys, drums and guitar

A trio rooted in improvisation and groove.

FM Experiment formed at Berklee College of Music, bringing together French drummer Flo Mavridorakis, Grammy-winning American keyboardist Warren Pettey and Italian guitarist Francesco Staccioli. The band blends jazz improvisation with hip-hop and afrobeat rhythms, funk grooves and electronic textures, in music that is spontaneous and richly layered at once.

Their debut album Shades set out that collaborative sound, and two fully improvised beat tapes, Imperfections and The Figueroa Beat Tape, captured the raw energy of their live sessions.

Icarus is their most ambitious record yet: a concept album that reimagines the myth. In this telling, the artist turns back before the fall and discovers that restraint can be its own form of flight. It arrived as five singles, each drawn as its own figure, before coming together as one album.
